The official Twitter Android app is out now but unless you’re packing a phone running Android 2.1, you’re out of luck. The official Twitter Android app, Twitter for Android, is free in the Android Market right now but if you’re not lucky enough to have a handset with Android 2.1, what are you missing?
First Twitter punted out an official Twitter for Blackberry app, then it hoovered up Tweetie 2, which is set to become the official iPhone Twitter app, and now the official Twitter for Android app has arrived. If you’ve got an Android 2.1 phone like the HTC Desire, HTC Legend, Google Nexus One or Motorola Milestone, you can grab it now.
The Twitter for Android app will add a share button in your favourite application for sharing images via Twitter. You can see your Twitter timeline in a home screen widget, geotag your tweets and see the location a tweet was sent from on a map.
The Twitter for Android app will also show friends’ latest tweets in any application with the QuickContact bar including the phonebook and GoogleTalk.
Google is due to open source the code behind Twitter for Android soon so it’s likely that we’ll see a selection of apps from other developers following it. Perhaps some of them will work on versions of Android other than Android 2.1. If you’ve grabbed the Twitter for Android app, let us know what you think of it.
