iPhone 4.0 dated and specced

The iPhone 4.0 rumours are starting to hot up, and the iPad isn’t even out yet: after yesterday’s front panel leak, two extremely reliable publications have come through with even more gossip on the iPhone 3GS sequel, and if they’re on the money, it’s going to be a bit special. Read on for the skinny.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the rumoured iPhone 4.0 will be released in the Summer, around the same time as previous iPhones have dropped – so June – according to people “briefed on the matter.” While the paper provides no specs, we’re told the iPhone 4.0 will be made by Hon Hai, the Chinese electronics giant that has made previous iPhones, and that a special CDMA iPhone will be made for those in the US, which could potentially be used on Verizon and Sprint’s networks.

One person who does claim to know the specs of the iPhone 4.0 though is Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, the only person to accurately leak the name of the third iPhone ahead of launch, and they’re seriously tempting. The iPhone 4.0 will reportedly pack a super sharp 960×640 screen (Sharper than any smartphone on the market right now), a processor based on Apple’s A4 system on a chip as seen in the iPad, and a front facing camera for video chats. The iPhone 4.0 OS will also finally allow for third party multitasking, he claims, so you’ll be able to play Spotify in the background and surf the web, just as you can on Android.

We’re surprised to hear just how sharp the iPhone 4.0′s screen will be, but we hope Gruber’s got it right again. Got your eyes on a HTC Legend? Its only real rival could be coming in just a few months.
