Alcatel OT-980 Android phone - UK date and price

The Alcatel OT-980 Android phone we went hands on with at Mobile World Congress last month is headed to the UK, we can reveal. We’ve got the launch date for the Palm Pre-alike messaging mobile, as well as just how little it’ll set you back, so read on for the skinny.

The Alcatel OT-980 Android phone, armed with a 2.8 inch touchscreen and slide out portrait QWERTY keyboard, is set to go on sale in the UK in August, we’ve confirmed. While that’s slightly later than the May window we were told to expect at Barcelona last month, it should mean Alcatel can roll out that tasty Android 2.1 update to the Alcatel OT-980 Android phone in time.

Don’t mark the Alcatel OT-980 off as an Android also ran though, just because it has a cheap resistive touchscreen: Alcatel has told us it’s aiming to sell this for under £100 on Pay As You Go – no contract tariffs will be offered. The Android T-Mobile Pulse Mini has already broken that price barrier, but we’ll take a keyboard to go with a tiny smartphone screen any day, and its messaging credentials should give INQ food for thought.

Alcatel has still to confirm networks and exact cost for the Alcatel OT-980 Android phone in the UK, but we’ll let you know as soon as they’re locked in: it’s shaping up to be just about the best budget smartphone yet.

Out August | £TBC | Alcatel
