Alcatel OT-980 Android phone dated for Europe

We just stumbled across the Alcatel OT-980 Android phone here at Mobile World Congress, and immediately did a double take. Isn’t this a Palm Pre? Still, we’ll take some portrait QWERTY Android any day: we did some digging and grabbed the date it’s headed for us Euro folk, as well as some hands-on shots and video.

The Alcatel OT-980 isn’t exactly that well specced as Android phones go: it only runs version 1.6, and the 2.8-inch screen is nothing to write home about. But we just can’t help but love that sliding form factor, lifted straight from the Palm Pre and Palm Pre Plus, and buttons seem thoroughly responsive and easy to type with.

Alcatel confirmed that the Alcatel OT-980 is headed to Europe in May, with an update to follow to take owners to 2.1 within a few months, so if you’re bored of waiting for an Android BlackBerry basher to come along, look out for it then. In the meantime, check out the Alcatel OT-980 here in our stills and video!
